Hello! My name is Casey, I am 30 years old and I am from Perth, Australia. I am very inspired by nature and its different patterns and textures. I love to travel and soak up all the inspiration and ideas that I can from the different places that I go. I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember. Art is one of my greatest passions in life and is a form of therapy for me! I love sitting down at my desk and physically creating the things that are going on inside of my brain. I’ve always been really shy about showing my artwork to other people. I have Impostor Syndrome, which means I am constantly critiquing myself and being held back by limiting beliefs. This year one of my goals is to be brave and to start showing my work.
I have done two exhibitions before. The first one was a pop up exhibition at a vegetarian/vegan cafe called Pranah, which is in Newtown Wellington. They let an artist put up their work for a month, and you can sell your pieces if you wish to. The first drawing I ever sold was to a kindergarten teacher in Newtown. It was such a beautiful experience that I’ll never forget. I had no idea where I was taking the drawing to until I got to the kindergarten. As I rounded a corner I saw a lady sitting with the children in the sand pit and she was playing her guitar. When she saw me coming she started singing about my painting and I knew that it was for her!! I was so happy that my drawing was going home with such a beautiful human. The second exhibition which I was part of was put together by InsideOUT, a Wellington-based LGBTQAI+ organisation that is a massive advocate for the rainbow community of Aotearoa. The exhibition was at Matchbox Gallery in Wellington, and the money from the sold pieces when back into organisation. I drew the pieces I created for this exhibition at the Luminate Festival in 2017. I would sit in my tent at night and during the day drawing my little characters and finished everything up in a little cafe in Takaka. I love telling the story of art and the process of making it, it’s really special to me. 🙂
I did this piece one day when I was feeling inspired by drawing lots of random lines and shapes, and suddenly I saw a turtle in one of the shapes and an ocean. I have a very strong connection to the ocean, to Tangaroa and his children. I found the wood on an adventure on the boulder bank one day, when there was a quarter moon and I bathed in the sea. I really love the patterns in wood, it’s almost an art piece all on its own. The title of this piece is a lyric from a song called The Seed, which is written by a Norwegian artist called Aurora. The song is a battle cry for the planet and a call for us to rise up and defend our planet from human destruction.
I created this piece to remind myself and people of our connection to the land and to nature, and how beautiful and precious it is. I hope to inspire people to look at the details and to find patterns, textures and curiosities wherever they go in life. To stay curious and child-like! ^_^
