Ali was born in Timaru. She shifted to Nelson in 1987 and attended Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology graduating with a Diploma of Craft Design in 1991. Ali is a member of the Suter Arts Society and has exhibited occasionally over the years in group exhibitions. She has worked in a variety of media including wood, clay, bronze and found materials. Ali worked in community arts in Nelson and as a support worker in mental health at Nikau House. Although she is now retired, she is still involved in community based projects and devotes time outside of studio time to her large garden which is always an ongoing creative project. Ali held her first solo exhibition at ”Three Eyes Gallery” in Breaker Bay, Wellington in 2016. In 2018 she had a solo exhibition at The Refinery Art Space in Nelson.
